Shetland aurora waves

Final managed to get out after a week of snow ice and gales, a clearish night and an aurora

It started early with an Orange alert by 5.30pm . These i manage to catch at about 6.15-7.15pm down at sandsayre
The tide was in and created some good photo opportunities
I really think you need a small torch to paint the landscape, it lifts the whole scene, but occasionally a silhouette is good as well.

It is good to have Sand Lodge, a big imposing building down at Sandsayre, this area  a memorial to a neighboro who passed away.

Strong Shetland Aurora with STEVE

The 25 September was another good night in Shetland with a superb aurora and a clear sky. The previous few nights also provided us with the lights but this was one of the best

Sandwick, it was so strong it was easily seen by the naked eye despite the light pollution
Tingwall great to see a clear sky and no wind, was cool though

STEVE makes a rare appearance, its been some time, the last 5 November 2023

Shetland Aurora season starts

A very spotty sun, more sunspots the better as we head to Solar Maximum
We have had a few Aurora sightings in Shetland, the earlier one in the month around or just passed midnight
Now it is getting darker earlier it is easier to get out to see them. This nice pink one is helped by one of the streetlight being out

Aurora and full moon

The Moon has been nearly at full making aurora photography more challenging. I manage to get down when a weak aurora arrived just as the moon was hidden behind the cloud
The moon rising behind Sandlodge in Sandwick

The sun has become more active this last two weeks with 3 X-Class flares and many M- Class Flares but few CME's which bring the auroras
