Sandlodge & the Super Snow Moon

Super Snow moon from Sandwick

There was a Super Snow Moon on Tuesday night and for once it was a clear night. It started a bit cloud but I had nearly a perfect sky from around 8pm

Its a Super Snow moon because its inflated in size and luminosity because  it occurs on the near side of the Moons orbit

Its 8% wider and 16% brighter, but since there is nothing to measure the scale it looks like an ordinary moon

Sandlodge is at Sandwick just a few minutes away from where we live and it always provides a good backdrop to any night sky photos to the east

Aurora at Sandwick

The other night it was a reasonable clear sky but we had visitors and they only left as the Orange Aurora alert came out. Knowing the stats were on the increase i quickly headed down to Sandsayre at Leebitton, Shetland

 Its only 5 mins away, my other preferred locations are a good 15 mins away and as cloud was rolling in i didn't want to chance missing the Aurora

 Waves came crashing over the jetty and i just dodged out of the way in time.

 The lights became brighter and started to dance for a short time before levelling off.

It was good to meet everyone who started the Night Sky photography course the following day, a good range of experience

Sandwick Aurora

A clear night in between cloudy windy nights so I took a short trip over the hill to Sandsayre in Sandwick to see the Aurora 

The sky was mostly clear until a bank of cloud moved in , the moon also came out at 9.40pm

Light pollution from Cunningsburgh is always a problem from this site although its now a mix of LED and sodium lighting.

                        I wasn't the only one down at the beach as an otter appeared for a few mins .

I thought the moon at one side and Cunningsburgh lights with the Aurora in the middle provided a nice balance, although it would have been better without any artificial lighting

Sandlodge was nicely lit up by some car headlights, a better position here than full on as the lights from the house proved too much for the camera to handle
